Release from city of Manhattan:
Manhattan Parks and Recreation follows CDC recommendations for responding to fecal incidents in chlorinated recreation water venues. Fecal incidents are a concern and an inconvenience to both pool operators and patrons.
We felt it is important for patrons to understand why the pool needs to be closed in response to a fecal incident. Pool closure is necessary for proper disinfection and protection of the health and safety of swimmers and staff. Pool closures allow the chlorine to do its job – kill germs and help prevent recreational water illnesses.
Response is based on the type of fecal incident and they should not be treated the same. A diarrheal fecal incident is a higher-risk event than a formed-stool incident. Manhattan Parks and Recreation has certified Aquatic Facility Operators who are trained in the proper response for these types of concerns.
We realize this is an inconvenience to those who are participating in classes and lessons as well as those who enjoy swimming at any of our pools. However, your safety is our concern and we must have time to put our hyperchlorination process into action and allow for proper disinfection time.
Patrons should feel comfortable visiting any of our pools knowing that they safety and enjoyment are our top priority. City Park Pool will likely open Thurs., July 23, after our final testing is complete.
As always, we encourage patrons who are ill to avoid visiting our pools until they are no longer experiencing symptoms.
