Rock Creek’s USD 323 met with more success than Manhattan/Ogden’s USD 383 before the State Finance Council, in asking for emergency aid Monday. Rock Creek is to receive $141,000 of the $229,000 requested, with Manhattan/Ogden only getting $26,000 of the $498,000 requested.

Fortunately for Rock Creek,  district enrollment per capita grew by five percent this year. On September 21st, the district  will submit official numbers to the state to receive additional funding this year. Stufflebeam said his biggest complaint with the situation is that the additional funding would only be guaranteed for this year – meaning even more growth for next year would cause more financial problems for the district.
Stufflebeam said while his district grew five percent this year, there were other districts from around the state who grew substantially more.

The Associated Press is reporting The State Finance Council, which includes Gov. Sam Brownback and eight legislative leaders, granted about $2 million total to 13 school districts experiencing considerable growth in student enrollment this year.

The panel granted another $4 million to 22 districts that lost local revenue for this school year because of declines in the valuation of oil and gas properties. Most of those districts are in western Kansas.

KMAN’s Andrew Shores spoke with Supt. Stufflebeam Monday afternoon:
