Dozens of students, faculty, and K-State supporters gathered in Bosco Plaza on Wednesday afternoon for a groundbreaking ceremony at the K-State Student Union. President Kirk Schulz, Dean of Students Pat Bosco, Union Director Bill Smirga and members of K-State’s Student Government Association overturned dirt to mark the beginning of a two-year process that will propel the building into the future.
During his speech, Dean Bosco shared the rich history of the Union. The current renovation project is funded by a raise to student activity fees, and Bosco shared the Union building was first paid for by raises to tuition in 1941. Since then, it has served as a home for students looking to take a break between classes, and for many campus organizations to hold meetings.
“It truly is a couch for our family,” said Bosco.
