A replacement project began on the K-18 Bridge located 4.5 miles east of the K-77 junction or 2.32 miles west of Zeandale in Riley County.  Project work includes removal of the existing 41.1-foot simple steel beam bridge with a 28-foot wide roadway which will be replaced with a new 24-foot by 32-foot by 24-foot reinforced concrete haunch slab bridge with a 36-foot wide roadway. Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.
Crews first set traffic control and then work began on construction of a paved shoofly that is being used to detour K-18 traffic while the bridge replacement project is underway. Construction of the shoofly is expected to be completed in mid-October, weather permitting.
There will be a 45 mph posted speed limit on the shoofly detour through the project work zone. The paved shoofly lanes will be 14-foot wide in both directions with no width restrictions.
King Construction Company, Inc. of Hesston is the primary contractor on this bridge replacement project with a total contract cost of $842,089. The scheduled completion date for the bridge replacement project is mid-April 2016, weather permitting.
