A collaboration between the Riley County Police Department and the local Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) will bring a new look to several officers this November and benefit low income families in the community at the same time. “Hair for the Holidays” will begin on November 1, 2015 and will allow officers the opportunity to forgo shaving for 30 days, presuming they donate $100.00 to the FOP Cops ’N Kids program.
Cops ’N Kids is a program that supports families in the community that cannot afford holiday presents and has been an annual program in the Manhattan and Riley County area for 27years. Each December a group of police officers, detectives, and corrections officers join forces to take several area children shopping. Historically the program has served approximately 50 families each year.
“Yes, we’re law enforcement, but we’re members of the community first. This is one of the ways we can give back. I’m really proud of the department and the community’s support of this program.” Brian Johnson, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #17.
Residents and visitors of Riley County can expect to see officers sporting facial hair for the cause beginning on November 1, 2015. Officers appearances will remain professional and each officer participating in the program will be equipped with cards listing instructions on how to find out more information.
