Monday’s Riley County Law Board meeting saw four award presentations coming from two separate incidents.
Sergeant Dan Bortnick and Officer Tanner Monroe were both given the Meritorious Service Award for their actions on May 3, 2015 in which a shooting suspect was apprehended after a foot chase, later being charged with 2 counts of attempted premeditated first degree murder and aggravated weapons violations by a convicted felon.
Officer Brian Dow and Jason Krause were given the Life Saving Award for their actions on July 3, 2016. Officers responded to a call that day in which an individual was attempting to jump off a window ledge to commit suicide.
Dow and Krause were able to pull the subject through a window ledge, subsequently saving the person’s life.
Two promotions were given in Monday’s meeting.
Brandon Tapp was promoted to Police Sergeant after being on the force since 2008. Supervisors were said to have identified Tapp early on as a confident and reliable police officer. Post-promotion, Tapp will be assigned to shift supervisor on the swing shift, in the patrol division.
Brad Jager was promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant after being on the force since February 2004. During his tenure he’s received many awards and served the RCPD in many facets, earning the distinction of Master Police Officer. He’s one of three brothers currently in law enforcement and his father is a retiree of the RCPD. Post-promotion, Jager will be assigned as the watch commander on watch 3, in the patrol division.
Captain Tim Hegarty spoke to the board about the use of body-worn cameras by Riley County Police Officers. He said data suggests that body cameras reduce the number of citizen complaints against officers. According to RCPD trends he believes the data to be true, but would like to wait longer to make a concrete conclusion.
