A former Manhattan man and K-State student has been bound over for trial in Sedgwick County in connection with an October murder case. Dane Owens, 28, was bound over by Sedgwick County District Judge Kevin O’Connor following a preliminary hearing, with bond set at $500,000. His trial has been set for May 15th.
As KMAN reported last fall, Owens, who was reportedly a K-State student at the time, was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 22 year old Rowena Irani of Wichita. Irani was found shot in the head in a home in northeast Wichita and was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but died the following day. She had reportedly broken up with Owens the week before.
Last October when KMAN first reported on the case, K-State officials confirmed Owens was a sophomore in social work at that time.
Sedgwick County District Attorney Media Coordinator Dan Dillon tells KMAN Owens has been bound over on three charges:1st degree murder, or in the alternative:felony murder and aggravated burglary. While each charge can be presented to a jury and a defendant may be convicted of more than one of the alternative charges, the defendant can only be sentenced for one of the alternative counts, that being the most severe offense.
