The academic accolades continue for K-State women’s basketball student-athlete Shaelyn Martin, as she was named the 2018 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in an announcement by the league office on Thursday. This is according to a release from K-State Athletics.

Martin, a product of Salina, Kansas, is the third player in program history to earn Big 12 Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. Since the inaugural honor in 2013, K-State leads the Big 12 with three recipients (Brittany Chambers, 2013; Kindred Wesemann, 2016; Martin).

A kinesiology major, Martin was a 2018 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Second Team honoree. She is also a two-time CoSIDA All-District VII First Team selection, a 2018 Big 12/Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award recipient and a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team recipient with a 4.0 GPA.

On the court, Martin was the third player in program history with 500 or more career points, 750 or more rebounds and 400 or more career assists. She concluded her career ranked fifth in program history for career assists with 423, ranked 10th for career rebounds as with 782, eighth for career steals with 212 and owns the school record for career charges drawn with 95.

In her senior season, Martin averaged a career-high 5.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 32 games. She scored in double figures in four games this season and has a pair of games with 15 rebounds. With her 119 assists in the 2017-18 season, Martin became the fourth player in program history with three or more seasons with 100 or more assists.
