Kansas State received a stonewall effort from new goalkeeper Emma Malsy and the Wildcats pocketed a second half goal by senior midfielder Morgan Mauck to register the first season-opening win in program history on Friday night, as K-State defeated Saint Louis, 1-0, at the K-State Soccer Complex.

Malsy made her first career K-State (1-0-0) start between the pipes and her first since starting for Arizona State on Oct. 23, 2016 at Oregon. The product of Westminster, California, recorded four saves on the night. Malsy was threatened midway through the first half with a line drive shot from distance by the Billikens, but she was able to push the ball off the crossbar and away from danger.

This was the first win for Malsy since Oct. 6, 2016 at Washington, as a member of the Sun Devils. She improves her overall collegiate record to 4-4-1.

In a rematch of the first match in K-State history, Saint Louis came out with a strong offensive showing and registered an 8-2 edge in total shots. Kansas State dominated the offensive end of the field in the second half with a 7-3 advantage in total shots.

The offensive pressure paid off, as K-State was awarded a corner kick in the 82nd minute. After the initial attack was deflected out of the 18-yard box, K-State’s Avery Green sent a header toward the Saint Louis net. The bouncing ball found the foot of Mauck from seven yards out. Mauck was able to tap the ball past Saint Louis goalkeeper Olivia Silverman for the only goal of the night.

The goal by Mauck was her first of the season and the fourth of her K-State career. The Overland Park, Kansas, native, finished the 2017 season with two goals with her last coming on Sept. 8 against Central Arkansas. This was her second career game-winning goal.

Green notched her first career assist and her first point since scoring a goal at Oklahoma State on Oct. 20.

Overall, Saint Louis (0-1-0) finished with an 11-9 edge in total shots but K-State had the advantage in shots on goal, 7-4. The Billikens registered a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Kansas State will conclude the opening weekend on Sunday at 12 p.m., against Oakland. Sunday’s match is Sunday Family Day and will feature a free postgame youth clinic and team autographs on the field.
