Manhattan rolls out party registration program

A new program in Manhattan aims to help with noise mitigation during house parties while building bridges between K-State students and RCPD.

The City of Manhattan announced in a release Monday that they are partnering with the Riley County Police Department and Kansas State University to develop their new party registration program. Party organizers can register their Friday and Saturday night get-togethers through the program.

Lacy Pitts, Vice President of the SGA and intern with the City Manager’s Office, helped spearhead the program. “Party registration also gives students the opportunity to correct their actions in order to respect fellow community members, with less fear of a penalty ruining their weekend,” Pitts said.

As part of the registry, hosts must share their contact information. That way, should anyone call and complain about the noise generated by the party, officers will be able to call the host and ask that the noise be reduced without an officer having to be dispatched to the scene. If there are repeat noise complaints after a party host is asked to keep it down via phone, officers will come to the address.

“The goal is to help foster positive relationships between K-State students and RCPD, and maximize efficiency all while reminding party hosts of their responsibilities to abide by the city’s noise ordinance,” Assistant to the City Manager, Jared Wasinger said.

Parties can be registered on the City of Manhattan website, but forms must be submitted by Friday at noon for a Friday or Saturday party. Registration requires the date and address of the party as well as names and phone numbers for primary and secondary contacts. Contacts must be tenants or owners of the property at which the party is occurring.

City officials also advise party organizers to refer to the city’s noise ordinance policy if they have any questions.
