Student athletes strive to raise thousands in canned food drive Saturday

FILE - In this Jan. 8, 2014, shows the contents of a specially prepared box of food at a food bank distribution in Petaluma, Calif., part of a research project with Feeding America to try to improve the health of diabetics in food-insecure families. California plans to delay state-required warnings on metal cans lined with the chemical BPA, arguing too-specific warnings could scare stores and shoppers in poor neighborhoods away from some of the only fruits and vegetables available — canned ones, officials said Thursday, March 24, 2016. The 23rd annual Cats for Cans food drive will be taking place during tomorrow’s game.

The drive is organized by the K-State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. They’ll be accepting donations of canned food or cash starting at 9 a.m. in the Bill Snyder Family Stadium parking lot and at all stadium entrances.

This year’s goal is to raise $5,000 pounds in food and $12,000 dollars in cash donations. All donations go to the Flint Hills Breadbasket in an effort to fight hunger in Manhattan. The Breadbasket provides meals for thousands of families in need throughout the area.

Those who can’t make it out but still want to donate can do so throughout the week at local Dillons, Hy-Vee and Walmart locations.
