Update: Man who self-immolated in Paxico not believed to live in area

Wabaunsee County Sheriff Rob Hoskins has provided additional information on the man who self-immolated himself Thursday evening outside of a Paxico winery.

Sheriff Hoskins posted on the department’s Facebook page that the man’s name has not been confirmed via autopsy, but he is not believed to have been local resident and had no ties to the area.

The Manhattan Mercury is reporting that Wyldewood Cellars Winery Manager Beth Brewer identified the man as Christopher Jolly.

One person is dead following a Thursday evening fire at a Wabaunsee County winery.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that a longtime manager of the Wyldewood Cellars Winery in Paxico said a person set themselves on fire outside the front door. The winery had closed at 4:30 p.m. due to the winter weather conditions. The fire was reported sometime around 6 p.m. The fire spread to the nearby building. The person’s body and a gas can were reportedly found near the front entrance.

At least seven different fire departments including crews from Wamego and Wabaunsee responded to the blaze. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

The victim’s name has not been released. Further details are pending.

7 a.m. Friday

PAXICO — One person was killed Thursday evening when fire broke out at a Wabaunsee County winery.

Wabaunsee County Sheriff Rob Hoskins has confirmed the death. Fire tore through the Wyldewood Cellars Winery off I-70 outside Paxico just after 6:30 p.m. Reports say the fire started in the front of the building but a cause has not been determined.

At least seven different fire crews including crews from Wamego and Wabaunsee responded. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

The victim’s name has not been released. According to the winery’s Facebook page the person who died was not an employee. Further details are pending.
