Kansas’ Highway Patrol superintendent and fire marshal will remain in their roles after Gov.-elect Laura Kelly is inaugurated on January 14.

The retention of Colonel Mark Bruce, who has served in the Highway Patrol for more than 29 years, and Doug Jorgensen, who has more than 30 years experience in law enforcement, was announced by the Kelly team in a release Thursday.

“Colonel Mark Bruce has effectively led the Kansas Highway Patrol in recent years and has been a strong advocate for law enforcement officers,” Kelly said of Bruce, who has multiple degrees in criminal justice including a Master’s degree from Washburn University. “I have no doubt he will continue to put the safety of Kansans first while also representing the needs of the Kansas Highway Patrol.”

Prior to being named superintendent, Bruce was the major overseeing the Highway Patrol’s Western Region and Central Communications. He’s worked in various roles in his career including with the Highway Patrol’s Emergency Operations and Homeland Security.

“This is a pivotal moment for our state and I am honored to continue serving the people of Kansas,” said Bruce. “I look forward to partnering with Governor-elect Kelly in the coming years to keep our families safe.”

Jorgensen spent 28 years with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, starting his career with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department.

“We are pleased to announce Doug Jorgensen will continue as State Fire Marshal,” said Kelly. “His years of experience in the field and expertise make him a valuable addition to our team. I look forward to working with Colonel Bruce and Mr. Jorgensen to improve the safety of Kansas families.”

Jorgensen has served as fire marshal since 2012.

“This is an exciting time for Kansas,” said Jorgensen. “I look forward to working with Governor-elect Kelly and her team to support the state fire service and keep our families safe.”
