For the second time in program history and the first time since the 2001-02 season, Kansas State women’s basketball has garnered Big 12 Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors in the same week as Kayla Goth was named co-Big 12 Player of the Week and Christianna Carr earned co-Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors on Monday.
The last time Kansas State had two recipients of each of the Big 12 Conference’s weekly women’s basketball honors came on January, 7, 2002, as Nicole Ohlde was named Big 12 Player of the Week and Kendra Wecker was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
Goth shared the league’s weekly honor with Brittany Brewer of Texas Tech, while Carr spilt the rookie honor with Iowa State’s Ashley Joens. This was the second time this season Goth earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors, while it was the first of Carr’s career.
This was the 28th time that a Wildcat has earned the weekly Big 12 honor and the second time in the Jeff Mittie era. The Big 12 Freshman of the Week honor by Carr was the 27th time a K-State player earned the league’s freshman honor and the sixth time under Mittie.
Goth, the Big 12 leader in minutes played, did not come off the floor in the two games as she played all 80 minutes in the two games. For the week, she averaged 15 points, 10.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals.
Against the Longhorns, Goth registered her third double-double of the season with 20 points, 12 assists and four rebounds. The 12 assists were the most by a player in a Big 12 game this season. This was the second time in the career of the 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award candidate that she tallied 20 or more points and 12 or more assists in a game, as she is the only player in school history to achieve this stat line.
Goth also tied her career-high with a 7-of-7 effort from the free throw line.
At Texas Tech, Goth registered 10 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals in K-State’s fourth quarter comeback win. Goth scored eight points in the fourth quarter on a 2-of-2 effort from the field and a 4-of-4 performance from the foul line, with all four attempts coming in the final minute of the game as K-State secured its win.
With her nine assists at Texas Tech, Goth moved into sole possession of fifth place in program history for career assists with 432 passing former teammate Shaelyn Martin (423; 2014-18).
This season, Goth leads the Big 12 in total assists with 118 and assists per game at 6.6. She is second on the team in scoring with 12.3 per game and leads the team in steals (31).
For the week, Carr averaged 13.5 points on 52.9 percent shooting including a 6-of-12 effort from beyond the arc. She also averaged two steals and 2.5 rebounds.
Against Texas, Carr registered 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting including a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. She also pulled in two rebounds and pocketed one steal in 32 minutes of action. This was the fourth time this season Carr has made four or more 3-point field goals in a game.
At Texas Tech on Saturday, Carr tallied eight points, three rebounds and three steals. Carr made a pair of 3-pointers against the Lady Raiders and knocked down a pair of free throws in the final minute of the game to help preserve K-State’s fourth quarter comeback win.
In her debut season, Carr is averaging 9.3 points and 2.7 rebounds and is second on the team with 30 three-point field goals made.
