Kansas State Treasurer Jake LaTurner today announced his candidacy for the United States Senate. LaTurner is the first Republican to announce his candidacy for the position currently held by Senator Pat Roberts, who announced last week that his current term will be his last.

In a press release issued this morning, LaTurner says “Kansas Republicans deserve a candidate for the U.S. Senate who shares their values and is willing to stand up and fight for those values in Washington.” He added that “as a conservative, I will fight every day to represent our Kansas conservative values in Washington.”

The 30 year old LaTurner claims to be the youngest elected statewide official in America. The Galena native was twice elected to the Kansas Senate representing the 13th district in southeast Kansas. Former Governor Sam Brownback appointed LaTurner to be State Treasurer in 2017, when former Treasurer Ron Estes became the US Representative for the state’s 4th district.
