MANHATTAN — Travel deteriorated throughout the day Tuesday as freezing rain turned roads into an ice rink in the Manhattan area.
Numerous slide-offs were reported in Riley, Pottawatomie and Geary counties as travel became near impossible for the afternoon and evening commute. I-70 was closed at various points from Riley County to Dickinson County with reports of vehicles in the ditch, large amounts of stopped trucks and vehicles and at least two semis running into each other, jackknifing near Chapman in Geary County. K-18 westbound from Seth Child to Ogden were shut down but reopened by 4 p.m. (Click here for the latest updates from Riley County Police Department).
In Pottawatomie County, two school buses reportedly slid off the road near Onaga Tuesday morning. Thankfully no injuries were reported with that incident. Hwy 177 became impassable due to ice and a semi blocking the roadway as well. Pottawatomie County Public Works Director Peter Clark joined KMAN’s In Focus program Tuesday and noted early problems especially on gravel roads.
Tuttle Creek Blvd. was shut down briefly Tuesday afternoon from Marlatt Ave. to Highway 13 for an injury crash.
Main arterial roads were being treated as of late Tuesday afternoon but travel is not advised. Several evening activities were cancelled in the Manhattan area. Be sure to check KMAN’s closings and delays page. A Winter Weather Advisory continues area-wide until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
