SDSU’s Big Sixth Inning Dooms K-State Sunday

K-State saw a two-run lead evaporate after San Diego State put up eight in the sixth inning as the Aztecs claimed the finale of the Tony Gwynn Legacy, 10-7, Sunday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The Wildcats (3-5) opened a three-run lead after the third and led 4-2 as the game entered the sixth inning. SDSU (5-2) was aided by five walks issued by three K-State pitchers in the inning, scoring eight runs on four hits as 12 Aztecs came to the plate.

A three-run double by Chad Bible capped the scoring in the sixth. K-State starter Will Brennan left the mound with the bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth after he hit a batter, walked one and gave up two hits. Brennan, who allowed two runs through five innings, finished the game with six earned runs against him on nine hits to go with three strikeouts and two walks in taking the loss.

The Cats scored three unanswered runs over the eighth and ninth innings via a sacrifice fly by Chris Ceballos to go with RBI singles by Dylan Phillips and Zach Kokoska. Ceballos and Phillips each drove in their fifth runs of the season.

K-State stranded 10 runners on base and went 0-for-2 with the bases loaded.

Brennan put the Cats in front and helped his own cause with a two-run double in the top of the third, scoring Thomas Hughes and Caleb Littlejim. Hughes drew a walk before Littlejim singled. Brennan would come around to score on Cameron Thompson’s single to push the lead to three.

At the plate, Brennan was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

SDSU got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning after loading the bases and a bloop single by Angelo Armenta scored Jaden Fein, who sparked the inning with a leadoff double. An inning-ending double play halted the threat.

Fein’s RBI single in the fourth put K-State’s lead at just a run at 3-2.

Terrence Spurlin’s RBI single in the top half of the fifth pushed the Wildcat lead back to two runs at 4-2. Spurlin brought in Littlejim, who began the frame with a leadoff walk. It was Littlejim’s second run of the ballgame.

Ceballos drove in his fifth run of the season with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, bringing in Phillips who drew a leadoff walk.

Brennan, Spurlin and Thompson each recorded two hits in the game. Thompson drove in a run for the third straight game.

Kokoska tossed a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts in his season debut on the mound.

Nine different Aztecs registered a hit in the game with six driving in at least a run, led by Bible’s three RBI.

SDSU reliever Justin Goossen-Brow took the win after allowing just one hit over three innings with four strikeouts.
