Ex-Manhattan priest among 14 in diocese alleged to have sexually abused children

SALINA — An anonymous letter by three men alleges sexual abuse at the hands of a Manhattan Catholic priest who was superintendent of Seven Dolors Grade School and Luckey High School in the 1950s and 1960s.

William H. Merchant, who died in 1975, is alleged by the three men to have molested and assaulted them and other boys at the school. Merchant’s name was released with 14 other clergy members within the Catholic Diocese of Salina following an audit. None of the 14 priests are in active ministry today. Two are still living and have been laicized, meaning they are no longer members of the clergy.

The three men referenced Merchant in their letter as a “pedophile and sexual predator who ruthlessly exploited grade school and high school children over an extended period of time.” They allege Merchant “masqueraded as a Catholic priest while pursuing a true vocation as an aggressive sexual predator” and that his position as Superintendent offered him a “replenishable supply of victims to satisfy his perversity.”

Bishop Gerald Vincke writes that his “heart aches” for the victims and their families. He acknowledged times in the past when the Church “failed to address the needs of the people who are victims in favor of protecting the reputation of the priest.” Vincke says the diocese has made progress in ensuring it responds appropriately and effectively to any allegations made against clergy. The three men claiming abuse by Merchant have praised Vincke’s handling of the situation.

The other priests listed in the release who served in Manhattan include the late John Moeder who served at Seven Dolors from 1971 to 1981 and Robert Reif, who worked at St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center. Moeder had one claim of abuse that allegedly took place in the 1970s.

Reif was suspended from ministry after multiple allegations of abuse and was sent away for treatment from 1986 to 1987. He was later granted a leave of absence in 1988 and did not return to the Diocese of Salina. Reif was laicized in 2006. The report does not say if the abuse occurred while he was in Manhattan.
