MANHATTAN — New details have been released surrounding the events leading up to last month’s burglary of the Manhattan Goodwill store.
According to Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat, a Deputy Sheriff spotted a vehicle behind Academy Sports at 401 E. Poyntz shortly after 3 a.m. Feb. 19. Two individuals were spotted walking toward the vehicle and one appeared to be carrying something. The two entered the vehicle, an SUV, and drove off at a high rate of speed. After attempting to stop the vehicle, a chase ensued with the SUV wrecked in the area of Leavenworth and North Delaware Streets in Manhattan.
Authorities later learned a burglary had occurred at the Goodwill store. A search warrant was later conducted on the suspect vehicle and an undisclosed amount of cash and property was recovered that was identified as having been taken from the Goodwill store.
Sheriff Riat says the driver, 29-year-old Bryan January of Topeka fled the scene but was later located by Riley County Police. He was taken into custody for burglary, theft, fleeing to elude and other traffic violations. The passenger, 53-year-old Cheryl Walters of Topeka has since bonded from Pottawatomie County Jail on $25,000 bond for burglary, theft and $25,000 for fleeing to elude and other traffic offenses.
