The Kansas Highway Patrol says just minor injuries were reported after 11 vehicles were involved in a crash Friday evening, attributed to icy conditions on K-18, west of Manhattan.
The patrol says a Nissan Frontier was westbound and lost control on an icy bridge around 4:30 p.m.,, impacting bridge rails on both sides of the roadway. The crash caused a chain reaction collision involving 10 other vehicles which had difficulty stopping, due to conditions.
The driver of the Nissan, who is from Washington state, was not injured. The crash report indicates a passenger in one of the trailing vehicles, 32-year-old Shardac Pigue of Manhattan sustained a suspected minor injury. She did not require a hospital trip. None of the other drivers or occupants in any other vehicles were injured.
The roadway was closed for a few hours while emergency crews responded.
Elsewhere, a rollover crash was reported on K-177, south of Manhattan, near the I-70 junction just after noon Friday. That incident involved one vehicle, which rolled several times. A 19-year-old Gardner woman transported to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan with a possible injury.
In Pottawatomie County, two vehicles were involved in a crash on Hwy 24 near Camp Creek Road. The Highway Patrol says a westbound pickup crossed the center line, shortly before 7 p.m. causing a collision with an eastbound semi truck.
The pickup driver, 59-year-old Gary Roberts of Wamego sustained no apparent injury. The semi driver, a 42-year-old Texas man was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with a minor injury.
The Kansas Highway Patrol worked more than a dozen crashes on highways Friday evening across the state.
