The deadline for candidates to file for the 2020 election has passed. Here’s a look at the contested and uncontested races in both Riley and Pottawatomie Counties. The primary election is Aug. 4 and the general election is scheduled Nov. 3. This list includes all Manhattan area filings in both counties as well as state legislature and congressional races.

Advance voting by mail and in-person advance voting begins July 15 for the primary election. The deadline to register to vote in the primary is July 14.

    RILEY COUNTY

In Riley County, two seats on the county commission are being contested.

In District 2, incumbent Republican Marvin Rodriguez of Manhattan has filed for a second term. Rodriguez is the current county chairman. Challengers include Republicans Phil Mattox of Manhattan and Greg McKinley of Riley. Democrat Fanny Fang of Manhattan is also a candidate.

In District 3, Commissioner Ron Wells of Manhattan is seeking a third term as the Republican incumbent. Challengers include Republican John Matta and Democrat Kathryn Focke, both from Manhattan.

Elsewhere at the county level, Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson, County Clerk Rich Vargo and County Treasurer Shilo Heger are unopposed. Amy Manges is unopposed in her candidacy to become Register of Deeds.

In District 2, Republican incumbent Pat Weixelman of Wamego is seeking a fourth term on the commission. He’s opposed by current Republican County Clerk Nancy McCarter also of Wamego who is retiring at the end of the year from her current position.

In District 3, Republican incumbent and former County Sheriff Greg Riat of Belvue is unopposed. Riat was appointed to the commission earlier this year after former commissioner Travis Altenhofen resigned.

Two have filed for County Sheriff including current Sheriff Shane Jager and Wamego Police Chief Michael Baker, both Republicans.

Three have filed for County Clerk — all Republicans, including current Deputy County Clerk Dawn Henry and Wendy Hudson, both of Westmoreland. Leslie Dugan of Wamego has also filed.

Republicans including Lisa Wright is unopposed for the county treasurer seat, Betty Jo Abitz is unopposed for register of deeds and Sherri Schuck is unopposed in her re-election bid for county attorney.
