Update: Riley County reports 11 new cases of COVID-19; four from K-State athletics

By Brandon Peoples on June 17, 2020 COVID-19 updates, Local News, Riley County

The Riley County Health Department says 11 new positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed since Monday, one of the largest spikes in new cases locally since the pandemic began.

This is up from a Manhattan city official’s Wednesday-morning report showing there have been 10 new cases since Monday.

The new report also shows four of the positive cases are associated with K-State athletics after all returning players were tested, which is down from the initial announcement that six K-State athletes had tested positive. Two of the individuals are women in their 20s, one is a 39-year-old man and the other a man in his 40s.

The health department says there have been no new positives from the Leonardville Nursing Home. Employees and residents there were re-tested Tuesday, show nobody has tested positive since five cases were confirmed last week.

Ascension Via Christi hospital has two patients with COVID-19, both of whom are Riley County residents, and one Person under Investigation. One of the patients with COVID-19 is on a ventilator.

“Some increase of positive patients can expected as the community continues the reopening process,” Julie Gibbs, a Riley County Health Department official, said. “We will continue to monitor the data closely, taking a comprehensive look at the totality of circumstances before taking action that will impact the entire Riley County area.”

The cumulative total for Riley County is now 91 cases. Riley County also has 62 recoveries, 26 active cases, 96 pending test results, 1,865 negative test results and three deaths.

Kansas has a total of 11,681 positive cases, 1,011 hospitalizations, 130,443 negative tests and 247 deaths.
