A 24-year-old former Fort Riley soldier described as a Satanist by prosecutors has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison.

Jarrett William Smith was sentenced Wednesday for distributing information through social media about building a bomb and making napalm. Smith also has been linked to a neo-Nazi group by the Anti-Defamation League.

A federal judge denied a request by Smith’s attorney for a more lenient sentence of 15 months. Smith pleaded guilty in February to two felony charges of distributing information about explosives to an undercover FBI agent.

Prosecutors have said Smith did so “for the glory of his Satanist religion” and had a plan to overthrow the U.S. government.
