SHAWNEE, Kan. — The family of an 11-year-old Black girl who was injured in what they say was a racially-motivated attack in Kansas says it is important to talk to children about racism.

The family and their attorney spoke out Thursday at a news conference. KCUR-FM reports Nevaeh Thomas was visiting friends in Shawnee when a 12-year-old white boy started calling them racial slurs. The boy allegedly threatened them with a knife and hit Thomas on the head with a blunt object, leaving her unconscious. The girl received eight stitches and spent the night in a hospital.

She is still recovering from a concussion nearly a week after the incident.
