Gary Fike talks about free tax assistance program beginning in January

K-State Research and Extension is teaming up with the Manhattan Public Library to provide free tax assistance beginning in late January.

Gary Fike, KSRE Riley County Extension Director, says the program will be for households that make less than $57,000 a year, but not to those who have itemized taxes or are in the military.

“They’ve got folks on the Fort Riley Post that will do those for our men and women in the armed services, but they’ve got a few different wrinkles that we are not certified to do,” Fike says.

According to Fike, those who use this program will be in very qualified hands.

“We all have to take a test and pass it in several different areas before they’ll let us do it,” Fike adds. “We’ll have about nine or ten volunteers that do it, that will prepare taxes. We’ve got some wonderful people that have been there for a long, long time that have been doing it maybe since day one.”

For more more information about how to take advantage of this program, contact KSRE at 785-537-6350.

The KSRE office will be closed the week between Christmas and New Years Day.
