The filing deadline for Manhattan city and USD 383 school board election candidates came and went Tuesday.
All told, 10 local residents have filed for three seats on the school board and nine residents for three seats on the city commission. That means there will be a primary election August 3 for the school board race to narrow the field for the general election November 2. All nine candidates in the city race will be on the November ballot.
Manhattan City Commission
On the city commission, there are three open seats. Incumbents Wynn Butler, Aaron Estabrook and Usha Reddi are all seeking re-election. Just minutes before the filing deadline, Marcus Kidd signed his letter of intent with the Riley County Clerk’s office. Kidd is assistant director of enrollment management and institutional partnerships in the Kansas State University College of Education.
Earlier Tuesday, former city commissioner Rich Jankovich also filed. The rest of the candidate field includes Kaleb James, Monica Macfarlane, former city commissioner John Matta and Joseph McGraw.
USD 383 school board
On the USD 383 Manhattan/Ogden school board, at least two of three seats will turn over this fall.
Former board president Karla Hagemeister is the only incumbent seeking another term. Board members Jurdene Coleman and Katrina Lewison both decided not to seek re-election.
Among the nine other candidates are Bill Spiegel, who filed Tuesday ahead of the filing deadline. He’s joined by Jennifer Chua, Kevin Harms, Betty Mattingly-Ebert, Jayme Morris-Hardeman, Teresa Parks, Steven Ruzzin, Carl Treece and Christine Weixelman.
Riley County races outside Manhattan
Ogden City Council – Mayor Robert Pence has filed for re-election along with incumbent council members Ed Burch and Eladio Reid. Challengers include David Foster, Pam Gieber and James Pettay.
Following Tuesday’s filing deadline there were no candidates for the city races in Leonardville, Randolph or Riley.
USD 378 Riley County School Board – Six candidates have filed. They include incumbent board members Samantha Brown, Nathan Mead, Justin Ricketts and Christine White. Riley residents Brenda Jordan and Julie Thiele also filed.
USD 384 Blue Valley/Randolph School Board – Four candidates have filed. They include incumbents Tim Innes and Reo Schultz. Caley Brenner, of Randolph, and Melissa Geisler, of Leonardville, have also filed.
Pottawatomie County races
Wamego City Commission– Mayor William Ditto has filed for re-election, along with fellow commissioner Clifford Baughman. Resident Daniel Tidwell is also seeking election.
St. George City Council – Incumbents Scott Moses and Debby Werth have filed for re-election. Challengers include Jeremy Holliday, Judd McCormack and Spencer Parsons.
St. Marys City Commission – Matthew Childs is the only candidate to file.
Westmoreland City Council – Incumbents Ashley Rice and Jim Smith have filed for re-election.
USD 320 Wamego School Board – Incumbents Cory Meyer and Sheryl Wohler have filed for re-election. Michael Billings is also seeking a seat on the board.
USD 323 Rock Creek School Board – Incumbents Dawn Henry, Dan Moser and Jody Wick. Jared Meitler is an at large candidate.
