Two additional COVID-related deaths have been confirmed by the Riley County Health Department, bringing the pandemic total for the county to 57.

In the latest report, published Wednesday, the health department said a 51-year-old unvaccinated woman died Sept. 3 after testing positive three weeks earlier. The other individual, a 75-year-old man, was identified by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment as a probable case and verified by the Office of Victim Services. That individual was said to have died Sept. 15, 2020, nearly one year ago. At the time of his death the vaccine was not authorized or available.

A total of 108 new positive cases were identified in Riley County over the past week along with 67 additional recoveries. There are currently 176 active COVID cases and seven patients currently under care at Ascension Via Christi. Among them, two unvaccinated patients are in the Intensive Care Unit. Since December there have been 151 positive cases from variants of concern.

The percent positive rate climbed to 5.8 percent Wednesday, nearly two percentage points higher than last week (3.9 percent). Tune in to News Radio KMAN Thursday morning at 7 a.m. for the latest COVID broadcast update with local health officials.

In neighboring Pottawatomie County, health officials on Wednesday confirmed 56 new cases, though KDHE statistics show 77 new cases. (Official statistics from Pott County are shared at the bottom of this page.)

The Riley County Health Department is actively administering third doses (boosters) to individuals with serious health conditions who have received two Moderna or Pfizer vaccine doses. These health conditions include:

  • Active treatment for a solid tumor or hematologic malignancies

  • Receipt of solid organ transplant and taking immunosuppressive therapy

  • Receipt of stem cell transplant within the past two years

  • HIV infection

  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency

  • Treatment with high dose steroids or immunosuppressive drugs

Booster shot appointments are not available to the general public at this time.

Rapid and saliva testing is available Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Manhattan Town Center parking lot on the north side from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
