Firefighters were kept busy Saturday after a pair of house fires were reported in Manhattan.
Just after 5:30 p.m. the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 2025 Tecumseh Road for a single-story house showing fire from the rear. Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire, completed a search and had control of the fire within 20 minutes.
One occupant, outside of the home at the time firefighters arrived, was transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi for smoke inhalation. One firefighter was also injured on scene and transported to the hospital, and was treated and released.
Loss is estimated at $80,000 to contents and $115,000 to the structure. The house located at 2031 Tecumseh also sustained exterior fire damage estimated at $2,500. The fire cause is under investigation.
While on scene, crews also responded to 1327 Houston Street for a small fire in a basement stairwell of an apartment complex. Damage was estimated at $500. No injuries were reported and the fire department says improperly disposed of smoking materials are to blame.
