Junction City officials are continuing to work to make repairs to its water treatment plant after electrical issues led to hundreds of thousands of gallons of water flooding the plant’s basement this week, following Wednesday’s weather event.

In a joint press briefing Friday morning at the Geary County Emergency Operation Center, it was announced that work is ongoing and that officials are optimistic the water can be restored by this evening. That said, a boil advisory will continue for Junction City and surrounding communities until Kansas Department of Health and Environment officials can confirm the water is safe for consumption.

In addition, Geary County is also under a burn ban because of the water shortage. A limited number of cases of water are being distributed at the old Junction City High School at 900 N. Eisenhower Drive. Two water buffalo stations are available to residents. Officials were also anticipating two semi trucks filled with cases of water bottles later Friday.

    6 a.m. Friday update

Junction City residents continue to be in a boil water advisory Friday due to ongoing issues with its water treatment plant.

City Manager Allen Dinkel said late Thursday evening that they hope to have water back in the system by Friday afternoon. The boil advisory impacts customers in all of Junction City, Grandview Plaza and Rural Water District No. 1. Portions of Junction City remain without water. USD 475 Geary County Schools cancelled classes for Friday as a result.

Electric issues caused by Wednesday’s storms led to 600,000 gallons of water filling the basement of the water plant, according to WIBW-TV.

Residents were also being asked earlier in the day to conserve water as a result.

    4 p.m. Thursday update

Junction City residents are being advised of a precautionary boil water advisory, issued by KDHE, due to ongoing issues with its water treatment plant.

City Manager Allen Dinkel said late Thursday afternoon there is still water in the system, but that residents should boil all water intended for consumption as a precaution. This impacts customers in all of Junction City, Grandview Plaza and Rural Water District No. 1.

Electric issues caused by Wednesday’s storms led to 600,000 gallons of water flooding the basement of the water plant, according to WIBW-TV.

Residents were also being asked earlier in the day to conserve water as a result.

It’s unclear when the boil order may be lifted.

    12 p.m. Thursday update

Water conservation is highly recommended for Junction City residents due to electric problems.

The Geary County Emergency Operation Center held a meeting with Officials in attendance to update everyone on damages from recent severe weather.

Junction City and Grandview Plaza residents are being asked to conserve as much water as possible as the Junction City Water Plant sustained damage and is being worked on to restore services.

Grandview received authorization from the State of Kansas to setup a temporary burn site off Witt Rd. for downed trees and limbs.

For Geary County residents who are still without power there are three locations currently accepting residents for for shelter.

    JC Naz: 1025 S. Washington St. Junction City, 9 a.m. through 5 p.m.

Fresh Start Emergency Shelter: 136 W. 3rd St. Junction City, Open 24 hours

No timetable has been announced for when repairs could be made.
