After a rich history with Kansas State University and 20 years of serving as a faculty member the director of the AQ Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at K-State, Steve Smethers, will be honored at a retirement reception.
Smethers earned his bachelor’s degree from K-State in 1975 and his masters in 1985. Between that time, he owned a radio station in Norton which led him to a research agenda grounded in community media and engagement. In 1992 he earned his doctorate and began teaching at Oklahoma State University where he spent ten years.
In 2002 Smethers returned to his Alma Mater, Kansas State, and became part of the faculty and since then has served in several roles including associate director and director roles as well as heading the radio-TV sequence and advising the student run radio station, KSDB-FM.
Smethers was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2021.
A retirement reception for Smethers will be held as a come-and-go event from 4-6 PM on April 21 in the Doll Hall lobby. Remarks will begin at 4:30. Smethers is set to retire from K-State at the end of June.
