Manhattan-Ogden School Board members signed a resolution Wednesday night in support of public schools.
The measure came up as a majority of board members voiced displeasure with ongoing bills being considered in the legislature, including a bill that would create education savings accounts and/or tax credits for parents to send students to private schools. Some say it could harm public education, since it would likely cut from public school budgets. Board member Kristin Brighton says the legislature needs to prove it has a system that can hold private schools accountable with those funds.
Board member Christine Weixelman says parents should have more say on how their tax dollars are spent on education.
The resolution passed 5 to 1, with Weixelman opposing it. Board member Brandy Santos was absent from Wednesday’s meeting.
