Cheers could be heard from outside Anthony Recreation Center Friday as fans cheered on Special Olympic athletes during the annual Special Olympics Kansas State Basketball Tournament.
In addition to basketball games, Special Olympics Kansas Sports and Program Manager Krystin Guggisberg said the tournament involves other activities as well.
Additionally, the athletes can stay overnight at the Four Points by Sheraton and attend a banquet and celebratory dance Friday night.
Guggisberg said it’s been exciting hosting the tournament in Manhattan, especially with all of the support the community has shown for the athletes.
Typically, the state tournament is held in Topeka. Guggisberg feels the success of this year’s tournament will likely make Manhattan the host for the next few years.
Air Capital Flyers Athlete Derris Quick competed in the tournament and has been playing basketball for at least 8 years. He said the tournament allows him to play a fun sport and see friends from around the state.
Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau Sports and Leisure Sales Manager Marcia Rozell said it’s rewarding to support events like these, and its always enjoyable to see how much fun the athletes have.
The tournament kicked off Friday morning at Anthony Rec Center with the individual skills and cheerleading events. Games run from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free and open to the public.
