FBI takes lead on suspicious envelopes investigation

An investigation into around 100 suspicious letters with white powder sent to Kansas legislators and public officials is now being led by the FBI.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation announced the update Tuesday, saying the investigation has expanded beyond Kansas. KBI Director Tony Mattivi says the focus remains on ensuring the safety of Kansans and holding those responsible accountable.

KMAN has confirmed that letters were sent to Manhattan State Representatives Mike Dodson and Kenny Titus, as well as Junction City State Representatives Nate Butler and Jeff Underhill and Clay Center Representative Lewis Bloom. The letters contain a one page letter composed of letters of different sizes and fonts and an inner packet containing white powder. The letters appear to be targeted at Republican lawmakers by someone referring to themselves as “your secret despiser.”

KBI deployed over 60 special agents, forensic scientists and employees last week in response to these incidents. The Riley County Police Department’s Bomb Team and Hazardous Evidence Recovery Team was among 17 hazmat and bomb squad teams that responded across the state.

KBI encourages vigilance when handling mail and advises the public to report any suspicious letters containing an unknown white powder to the KBI or FBI immediately.
