The Flint Hills Discovery Center hosted the 13th annual Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest on Friday.
The finals were divided into serious and humorous categories, and poets ranged in age and experience.
Winner of the serious category, Kye Rieff has only competed three times but says Cowboy Poetry contests are a space that he feels comfortable sharing with his kids and family.
Rieff says he’s new to the world of cowboy poetry.
Winner of the humorous category, Mary Powell has been writing cowboy poetry since the ´90s. She says it is a unique experience and continues to do it for the community.
The two winners took home the Saddlejack Bradrick Award, the coveted Governor’s trophy buckle, gift certificates from leading western wear stores, free membership in the International Western Music Association-Kansas Chapter and two tickets to Saturday’s Symphony in the Flint Hills, which was held in rural Wabaunsee County.
