Kansas State University students, faculty and staff who utilize the Flint Hills ATA Bus fixed route system will no longer ride for free starting Aug. 14.
Flint Hills ATA says starting Aug. 14 riders will be required to pay bus fares when using the fixed route system or any other ATA services outside of campus, either using exact cash or by purchasing a bus pass. KSU Park & Ride Services, which operates on campus will remain free with ID.
In a statement Monday, K-State confirmed its decision to eliminate funding that provided the free fixed routes, “after a review and evaluation of budgetary needs.” Spokesperson Michelle Geering says K-State’s Housing and Dining Services and Parking Services are providing more than $147,000 in funding to support on-campus services this fiscal year, Both university units are self-funded and the university says they must balance services offered and maintenance needs with declining budget realities.
Additionally the university says it provides $50,000 in funding for Safe Ride services provided by Lyft.
Flint Hills ATA says it is actively seeking solutions for riders who may be impacted. Anyone having trouble affording a fare or bus pass can reach out to ATA for a Half-Fare card or information on where to find free passes in the community.
