The City of Manhattan says Hayes Drive will remain closed to through traffic longer than initially expected, as crews work to finish construction of a major storm water drainage structure and special sanitary sewer structures.
That’s Deputy City Manager Jason Hilgers on KMAN earlier this week. Hayes Drive was originally to reopen in November, but that became apparent in recent weeks to be an unrealistic timeline. Hilgers says there are many layers to the overall project.
The closure has been in place since March and work has involved raising the levee, storm water box construction, temporary protective embankments and major sanitary sewer and other utility re-locations. The levee project remains on track for completion sometime in mid-2024.
All commercial properties along Hayes will continue to maintain access from the south via McCall Road. Neighborhoods to the north of Casement Road will continue to be unable to access Hayes Drive, but instead will need to go south via Tuttle Creek Blvd.
Pedestrian and bicycle access from Casement around construction to the Old Blue River Trail continues to be maintained, though city officials say the actual route could shift during the final phases of construction.
