Jurors presented evidence showing apparent violation of protection order one week prior to murder

The murder trial for 28-year-old Kamahl Bobian continued Tuesday in Riley County District Court, with jurors hearing more testimony from the state’s witnesses.

Bobian stands charged with first-degree murder, aggravated burglary and two counts of violating a protective order in the September 2021 death of 27-year-old Shanell Bobian. Prosecutors presented witnesses from RCPD Tuesday who shared more details surrounding a protection from abuse order issued about a week prior to Shanell’s death. Jurors were shown a series of text messages sent from Kamahl, which appeared to violate terms of that order. Included in that was a nude photo of Shanell sent by Kamahl on Snapchat.

Jurors also heard from investigators at Kamahl’s mother’s home, where he reportedly dropped off their three children after the murder. Sometime that morning Kamahl is believed to have disposed of Shanell’s body near the Timber Creek area of Pottawatomie County before fleeing to Topeka where he wrecked his van and was subsequently arrested.

RCPD officers and the mother, Tracy Bobian testified that the children were unharmed. Kamahl had been living with his mother after the protection order had been issued.

Jurors heard from a friend of Kamahl’s who testified to drinking with him the night before the murder at a house party, but noted Kamahl did not exhibit any unusual or violent behavior when he was with him.

The state plans to continue presenting witnesses through Thursday morning.

The trial is expected to wrap up Friday in Judge Kendra Lewison’s courtroom.
