The new Manhattan City Commission will hold its first legislative meeting of the new year tonight at City Hall.
The agenda includes a consideration to adopt a new payment agreement with Kansas State University, related to the Manhattan Fire Department headquarters at 2000 Denison Ave. The city plans to divide the property into two tracts in order to remove the training facility and give that part of the property back to the university. The city commission approved a purchase of 9 acres on Amherst Avenue for a new training facility last February.
The city has had an agreement in place since 1994, in which the city provides fire services to KSU property located outside of the city limits, by withholding $225,000 in city/university fund revenue annually instead of transferring money to that fund. The new agreement recognizes that both parties benefit from the relationship and location of the headquarters as the city gets rent-free land and the university gets free fire services. The current ground lease expires in June 2034, but the proposed new interlocal agreement expires at the end of 2028 for the north tract and 2075 for the south tract.
City officials will also consider a rezoning matter on East Poyntz Avenue as well as the cemeteries master plan.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
