Pottawatomie County District Judge Jeff Elder today sentenced a Lecompton man to 24 months in jail, the maximum allowed under a plea agreement, in the Aug. 2022 vehicular deaths of Randy Tinkel of Wamego and his seven-year-old son.
Mark Stanwix will also serve probation on additional charges after pleading in February to two counts of vehicular homicide, three counts of aggravated battery, reckless driving and texting in connection with the fatal accident on Highway 24, just east of Wamego. The crash also injured Tinkel’s wife Jillian and 2-year-old son and Megan Schindler, of St. Marys. Stanwix was driving an MCM semi truck that crashed into a pickup and SUV.
The surviving victims spoke in court Friday stating how the events of that day forever altered their lives. Stanwix’s attorney read a statement on his behalf in which he apologized, stating he wished he could take back that day and start over.
After sentencing, Judge Elder immediately remanded Stanwix to the Pottawatomie County Jail.
