Some food items won’t be taxed by the state of Kansas in 2025

Those shopping at the grocery store in the new year will see the state sales tax on some items go to zero.

Beginning on Wednesday, the sales tax on “food and food ingredients for human consumption and certain prepared foods” will have a sales tax of 0% following legislation that was passed back in 2022 that lowered the tax beginning in 2023 from 6.5% to eventually 0% by 2025. This includes foods like eggs, bread and fruits. Meanwhile, non-food items will be still be sold at a 6.5% state sales tax.

This does not apply to all food goods sold in the store. Food items that are classified as “prepared food” by the Kansas Department of Revenue such as rotisserie chicken, will still have a sales tax of 6.5% applied at checkout. This will not count for baked foods as well.

This also does not mean that the sales tax has been eliminated entirely. The county and city sales tax will still apply at the grocery store when you shop in the new year.
