Heavy rains lead to road closures in northern Riley County

Heavy rain fell overnight in portions of northern Riley County, leading to some Wednesday morning road closures, according to officials with Riley County Emergency Management.

A bridge on Kansas Avenue, west of the City of Riley, remains closed until further notice after sustaining some asphalt damage from overnight storms. Officials said Public Works is assessing the damage, but hasn’t determined how long the closure could be in place.

Blue River Hills Road is also closed at the low water crossing. County officials said Wednesday that closure would remain closed until flood waters recede.

Elsewhere, in Clay County, Emergency Management officials said there has been excessive damage to county roads due to wash outs from flash flooding. An overnight structure fire, east of Clay Center, is also believed to have ignited from a lightning strike, officials said.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning through mid-morning Wednesday for areas of Geary, Clay, Riley and Pottawatomie counties, stretching from Wakefield to Onaga, after 4 to 6 inches of rain fell in the area overnight.

A flood warning also remains in place for Wildcat Creek at Scenic Drive.
