Defending state champion Manhattan High girls’ golf opened its season the same way it ended last year — on top.

The Indians held off rival Shawnee Mission East by two strokes at Tuesday’s Wamego Invitational, shooting a team score of 319 at Wamego Country Club to edge the Lancers’ 321.

“We just know that they’re going to be at the top, and so anytime we can compete with them, I think it’s a plus,” head coach Paige McCarthy said. “Being able to beat them this first tournament was good. I kept track on the online scores, and I thought that they had beaten us, because it looked like we were in second. When we won by two … every stroke counts.”
