A new-look Kansas State women’s basketball roster made a strong first impression on Wildcat fans Monday evening in K-State’s 100-35 win over Omaha in the season’s opening game.
“I thought it was a solid performance,” head coach Jeff Mittie said. “It’s different at home, different emotions, different energy, different nerves that go into it. And thought our group really did some things that were pretty solid most of the night. You could see we were kind of excited to play.”
The Wildcats were dominant from the jump, allowing just two made field goals in the first half, and hitting seven 3-pointers, all of which came in the first quarter.
Omaha woke up some in the second half offensively, but the Wildcats managed to keep their defensive intensity intact while shooting 58.8% from the floor in the final two quarters to thoroughly put the Mavericks away.
Sophomore guard Izela Arenas, a transfer from Louisville, led the way with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Junior Taryn Sides, one of three returners for the Wildcats and the only player to see time on the court last season, had 15 points while leading the team in assists with 12, with no turnovers, and rebounds with seven.
