Update: Winter storm warning issued for much of Kansas

By KMAN Staff on January 22, 2026 Local News, Weather Stories

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for large portions of central and northeast Kansas as a significant snow event is expected to impact the region this weekend.

The National Weather Service in Topeka says heavy snow is forecast from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday. Total snowfall amounts between 4 and 8 inches are expected across central, east-central, north-central and northeast Kansas.

Forecasters warn that roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous, making travel difficult at times. In addition to the snow, very cold temperatures will accompany the system, with wind chill values potentially dropping to between minus 15 and minus 20 degrees Saturday morning.

Residents are encouraged to make preparations ahead of time and limit travel if possible. Those who must be on the roads are advised to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles and monitor road conditions through local agencies or by calling 511.
