FORT RILEY — U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall anticipates a new agreement later this month expanding healthcare access for local veterans.

Marshall, a Kansas Republican, visited Fort Riley’s Irwin Army Community Hospital on Friday after months of advocacy and coordination with the Defense Health Agency and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs when reports surfaced that the hospital at 650 Huebner Road could be downgraded, threatening emergency, surgical and maternity care options in the north central Flint Hills region.

“We found out in November of 2024 that the Defense Department was going to take this hospital and turn it into an urgent care-type of clinic,” Marshall said.
