Area schools were well-decorated across the Kansas Class 4A and 3A-1A state tournaments this weekend, with five wrestlers taking home individual titles and several more placing at the highest level.
Wamego
The Wamego squads were each paced by a historic performance from freshmen.
The Wamego girls placed sixth as a team, led by Leolyn Karnowski’s state title at 155 pounds. Karnowski became the first freshman state champion in school history for the Red Raider girls. Peyton Brazzle added a third-place finish, while Nevaeh Beatty placed fourth.
Wamego’s boys finished seventh as a team at the Class 4A tournament in Salina, highlighted by a historic run from freshman Isaac Costa.
Costa captured the 106-pound state championship, also becoming the first freshman state champion in school history. The Red Raiders also saw Knox Karnowski place third and Talon Conrad finish fourth. Knox Karnowski made history of his own, becoming the first four-time state placer in program history.
Rock Creek
Rock Creek crowned a state champion and added three more medalists at the Class 4A state tournament in Salina.
Leading the 8th-place girls, Megan Ryan claimed the 140-pound state title, pinning her opponent in the finals to secure the championship. RaeLynne Wilson finished fourth at 170 pounds and Liliauna Nold added a fifth-place finish at 115 pounds.
For the boys, Wade Rottinghaus placed third at 190 as the Mustangs battled through the consolation bracket to bring home multiple medals.
