A dense fog advisory is in effect across portions of north-central and eastern Kansas Thursday morning, with forecasters warning that visibility could drop below a quarter mile in some areas. The advisory is expected to remain in place until around 10 a.m.
The National Weather Service in Topeka says the widespread fog could make travel hazardous during the morning commute. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights and allow extra distance between vehicles while traveling.
After the fog lifts, attention turns to the potential for thunderstorms overnight. Forecasters say scattered storms are expected to develop late Thursday night into early Friday morning across the region. Some storms could become strong to severe, producing hail up to half-dollar size and wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph. The tornado risk during this round of storms is considered low.
A greater risk of severe weather is expected later Friday. The weather service says storms could redevelop Friday afternoon and evening across central and eastern Kansas, bringing the potential for large hail, damaging winds and possibly a few tornadoes.
