Sylvester Terrell Broughton, 48, of Manhattan, was arrested at approximately 3:50 p.m. on May 28, 2026 in the 2100 block of Fort Riley Blvd. on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. This arrest stems from original charges of domestic battery. Broughton was issued a total bond of $5,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.
Kirk Lee Hartgenbush, 64, of Manhattan, was arrested at approximately 10:30 a.m. on May 28 in the 700 block of Allen Road on 24 counts of sexual exploitation of a child; possess media of a child under age 18. This arrest stems from a report originally filed in March 2026. Hartgenbush was issued a total bond of $100,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.
Officers responded to a report of an injury accident at approximately 9:55 a.m. on May 28 near Fort Riley Blvd. and Pillsbury Drive. Upon arrival, officers found a 2019 Ford Expedition, driven by Robert Whelchel, 38, of Manhattan, had struck a 2016 Toyota Camry, driven by David Smale, 67, of Westwood, Kan. Smale was transported to Via Christi Hospital for an evaluation. Whelchel was issued a citation for inattentive driving.
Officers filed a report for criminal damage to property at approximately 8:16 a.m. on May 28 in the 400 block of 3rd Street. The City of Manhattan was listed as the victim when it was reported an unknown suspect broke into the Blue Earth Plaza restrooms, damaging the deadbolt and lock. The total estimated loss associated with this case is $3,200.
