An inmate at the Riley County Jail died Thursday night after being found unresponsive inside the facility, according to the Riley County Police Department.
Corrections officers discovered 60-year-old Michael Lee Stanfield of Manhattan unresponsive at approximately 9:22 p.m. June 25. Riley County EMS was dispatched and arrived at the jail at 9:29 p.m.
Despite life-saving efforts, Stanfield was pronounced dead at 9:51 p.m.
Authorities said there does not appear to be any criminal activity associated with the death. Stanfield’s next of kin has been notified.
In accordance with department policy and Kansas law, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation responded to investigate the death. The KBI investigates all deaths that occur in Kansas prisons and jails unless the inmate was under regular physician care or an autopsy determines the death was from natural causes.
The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
