Camper fire spreads to pontoon boat at Milford campground

By KMAN Staff on July 27, 2026 Geary County, Local News

Firefighters from multiple agencies responded Monday morning after a camper caught fire at a campground in Milford, damaging a nearby pontoon boat and two additional campers.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 11 a.m. July 27 to Flag Stop Campground in the city of Milford for a reported camper fire.

According to the Geary County Fire Rural Fire Department, the blaze spread from the camper to a nearby pontoon boat. Two neighboring campers also sustained exterior damage before firefighters brought the fire under control.

Geary County Fire Rural Fire Department, the City of Milford Fire Department and Fort Riley Fire Department responded to the scene. The Junction City Fire Department provided a medic unit, while the Wakefield Fire Department assisted with water supply using a tender.

An investigation conducted by the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office and a Geary County fire investigator determined the fire was most likely caused by a rooftop air conditioning unit on the camper.

No injuries were reported during the fire or the firefighting efforts.
